Cockatoo Island: Heavy Shop 1

Wardale 014

Synthesiser, mig welder and fabric testing machine.

I made this piece originally for one of my six mirrored video enclosures built for a collaborative project with Paul Irving, The Perpetual Light Machine
The imagery is from a machine shop that I worked in as an apprentice at Cockatoo Island, Sydney Harbour from 1981 to 86. My experience of the island has informed my artwork for decades as well as providing my introduction to the mechanical/metalworking trade that I still enjoy. The island is well known for its vast industrial architectural spaces and its significant history.
I filmed the machinery (including lathe, vertical borer, planing machine, broaching machine, plate press and what I think is a crane winch) during a visit for the 2014 Sydney Biennale.
